Total combined size of the webfonts used is too big (over 200KB)
This means that the URL in question loads in webfonts with a total combined size of over 200KB.
Why is this important?
Unlike web-safe fonts, webfonts are not pre-installed on devices, and must be downloaded by the browser before they are displayed. URLs that contain webfonts with a total combined size of over 200KB are not well optimized for the web. This could be a compresson issue, a font that contains too many glyphs or a font with complex shapes.
What does the Hint check?
This Hint will trigger for any internal HTML URL that loads in at least webfonts that have a total combined size of 200KB.
How do you resolve this issue?
Web font optimization is a complex topic and there are many different ways to optimize the delivery of fonts. Exactly how you optimize your fonts will depend on your hosting preferences, your site’s design and server, your technical abilities, and how far you are willing to go to improve the performance of your fonts.
It’s always worth negotiating with your designer as sometimes they’ll be happy for you to use smaller, alternative fonts. If this is not possible, and you are concerned that the weight of the fonts is affecting load time too much, then you could consider editing the font to reduce the file size.
